Tim Wynn Scores Sci-Fi Thriller FREAKS – In Theatres Friday, September 13
Award-winning composer Tim Wynn (CW’s SUPERNATURAL, XCOM, MECH-X4) has scored the genre-bending psychological sci-fi thriller FREAKS, starring Emile Hirsch (INTO THE WILD), Bruce Dern (ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, SILENT RUNNING) and introducing Lexy Kolker. Written and directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, whom Wynn previously collaborated with on the Disney XD series Mech-X4, FREAKS first received acclaim following screenings at the Venice and Toronto international film festivals and is among USA Today’s must-see movies this fall. Wynn’s score will be released on all major digital platforms through the label MovieScore Media alongside the film’s theatrical release on Friday, 13th September.
FREAKS portrays the story of 7-year-old Chloe (Lexy Kolker), who lives in both fear under her father’s (Emile Hirsch) protective and paranoid control, and fascination of the outside world, where Abnormals create a constant threat – or so she believes. When a mysterious stranger (Bruce Dern) offers her a glimpse of what’s really happening outside, Chloe soon finds that while the truth isn’t so simple, the danger is very real.
Wynn’s score offers a dark and mysterious perspective for the film, as it builds to blend string quartet and full string ensembles with a variety of synthetic colors and custom sounds. “The most important piece in the score is Chloe’s theme,” describes Wynn. “It’s only a 5-note theme but it had to be used in so many different ways. You really get inside her head, the joy of being outside for the first time, kids riding on bicycles, seeing a tree for the first time, taking a ride in an ice cream truck, going to a playground for the first time, and what that feels like…I wanted to evoke that childlike awe and love of life but at the same time I had to add a little unassuredness because there is still that dark element. So I was looking for a musical thread that we could use throughout the film as she’s learning about the world and taking charge over her own destiny.”
Added directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein: “Tim did an amazing job creating themes that really told the story through Chloe’s childlike perspective. The music had to represent everything that she was feeling. There are a lot of times in the film where she’s full of hope and wonder but you’re really worried about what’s going on, so the music had to both have this twinkly beautiful what is happening moment and at the same time this underlying creepiness and feeling of suspense.”
