Pinar Toprak Scores Pixar’s PURL
Agent extraordinaire Richard Kraft posted on Facebook that Pinar Toprak has become the first woman to compose a score for Pixar. She wrote the music for the first short film from Pixar’s new SparkShorts animation program, aimed at cultivating independent projects from the company’s talent.
“The SparkShorts program is designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows,” wrote Pixar’s President, Jim Morris. “These films are unlike anything we’ve ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare.”
PURL is the delicious tale of an earnest ball of yarn named Purl who gets a job in a the delicious tale of an earnest ball of yarn named Purl who gets a job in a fast-paced, high energy, bro-tastic start-up. Yarny hijinks ensue as she tries to fit in, but how far is she willing to go to get the acceptance she yearns for, and in the end, is it worth it?
The music is a delight, a pleasing mix of light ‘60s-ish jazz that lends a lovely lighthearted vibe over which the fanciful tale proceeds. “I had a chance to go back to my jazzy self with this, and it was an absolute joy!” Pinar posted on her Facebook page.
PURL is directed by Kristen Lester and produced by Gillian Libbert-Duncan, and features the voices of Bret “Brook” Parker (as Purl), Jimmy Lillard, Michael Yates, and Emily Davis.
