Goldsmith’s SMALL SOLDIERS expanded soundtrack release
Varèse Sarabande Records has announced a new limited edition Club CD – a deluxe release of Jerry Goldsmith’s score to Joe Dante’s 1998 science fiction film SMALL SOLDIERS.
When teenager Alan (Gregory Smith) buys a set of Commando Elite action figures, he’s unaware that they have been programmed with military technology. The toys, including leader Chip (Tommy Lee Jones), spring to life and start taking their directives seriously, beginning by “killing” their enemies, the toy Gorgonites. But Archer (Frank Langella) and the Gorgonites won’t go down without a fight. Alan gets caught in the middle of the war, as does his neighbor and crush, Christy (Kirsten Dunst).
“[This] expanded release is a revelation,” remarked writer Jeff Bond, author of the new CD’s extensive liner notes booklet, in a Facebook post. “It’s amazing how much original thematic material Goldsmith builds into this score (including multi-level themes for both the good and bad guy action figures, a love theme, a corporate CEO theme, and some wonderfully uplifting, mystical music for the dawning of awareness for the “Gorgonites” and their search for a homeland) along with fun movie references including to Franz Waxman’s Bride of Frankenstein score and more. Wildly enjoyable!”
Additional limited edition Club releases announced by Varèse Sarabande today are an expanded and extensively remastered album of John Williams’ Western score for THE COWBOYS (1972); a reissue of the label’s long-out-of-print 2001 release Georges Delerue: The Complete London Sessions (which had combined three separate 1991 CDs into a single 2-CD edition); and an “encore” release of David Newman’s score for the cult classic HEATHERS (1989).
The SMALL SOLDIERS Deluxe Edition is a limited edition Of 3000 Copies. CDs will begin shipping the week of June 18
