Martin Dirkov Scores Swedish Horror Film KNOCKING
KNOCKING (Swedish: Knackningar) is a 2021 Swedish thriller film directed by Frida Kempff in her feature film debut, and written by Emma Broström. Starring Cecilia Milocco, Krister Kern, Albin Grenholm, Ville Virtanen and Alexander Salzberger, the film is about Molly (Milocco) who leaves a psychiatric ward after a nervous breakdown and moves into a new apartment to begin her path to recovery; but it’s not long after her arrival that a series of persistent knocks and screams begin to wake her up at night. Molly’s new life begins to unravel as the screams intensify and no one else in the building believes or is willing to help her.
A timely psychological horror-thriller built on very real human fears and anxieties, skillfully lensed with claustrophobic precision by Hannes Krantz, KNOCKING is given a pulsing score by Danish composer Martin Dirkov (BORDER, ENFORCEMENT, THE CHARMER, SHELLEY, DON’T GIVE A FOX).
The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 30, 2021. The Rotten Tomatoes website gave the film an 81% positive review, with an average rating of 6.5/10. The critics consensus reads: “A slow-burning thriller that teeters between reality and delusion, KNOCKING views social issues through a blurred lens streaked with horror.”
