Michael Vignola’s Score for Canadian Horror Film HALL Released
– Randall D. Larson
The 2020 Canadian horror film, HALL, has to do with a debilitating sickness that spreads across a long hotel hallway, causing a few scattered victims to fight for survival and try to escape from the dark narrow stretch of isolated carnage. Directed by Francesco Giannini in his first feature film after making several short films and co-directing the Canadian documentary TAX SHELTER TERRORS (2017), the picture stars Julian Richings, Carolina Bartczak, Yumiko Shaku, Bailey Thain, and Vlasta Vrana.
The film’s tense and unnerving musical score is provided by Michael Vignola, an award-winning film composer born and raised in New York City who is known for combining a unique blend of classical, ambient and electronic music with elements of sound design.
In his Soundtrack Supplement #49, film music journalist Jon Mansell writes that “The music by Michael Vignola works superbly in the movie… The score is filled with an unsettling air that the composer fashions via synthetic means but even though its not an overblown or symphonic work it is still well written and placed to create maximum effect.”
The movie premiered on August 30, 2020 at FrightFest, and has had sporadic releases earlier this year. Vignola has released a digital soundtrack for the HALL score which is now available an Amazon, Apple Music, and other digital music resources.
