Alexandre Aja’s Hurricane Gator Thriller Gets a Soundtrack

Intrada Releases CRAWL soundtrack by Max Aruj & Steffen Thum

The high tension of Alexandre Aja’s summer thriller CRAWL, in which Kaya Scodelario (THE MAZE RUNNER films, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES) and Barry Pepper (TRUE GRIT [2010], THE GREEN MILE, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN) are trapped in their flooding basement during a Category 5 hurricane is drastically increased when large Florida alligators are driven into that same basement by the storm surge. The story’s suspense is nicely augmented by a scary musical score by Max Aruj & Steffen Thum. The two of them work out of Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions studio and have partnered for many years on film scoring assignments, including writing additional music for Lorne Balfe’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, Hans Zimmer’s and Rupert Gregson-Williams’ THE CROWN, Lorne Balfe’s GEOSTORM, and others. They both also co-scored Netflix’s movie IBOY and indie thriller WARNING SHOT.

“In the canon of horror thrillers centered around nature vs humankind, this is a really good one,” Intrada writes. “Daughter and father struggle to connect amidst a terrifying storm and resulting floods. But those are the lesser of their challenges. As the horrors unfold, we become committed to both characters, care about them, root for them to survive—a rarity in most horror films. Aruj & Thum start off literally with a roar—or more accurately, a growl. Scary musical effect, heard in key places, brings vivid fear to story. Aggressive rhythmic figures and tone clusters underline the intense dramatics. Haunting sad-tinged melody plays for daughter and her moving attempts to connect with her father. A rich chordal motif gives focus to nature, in this case massive floods everywhere… and never too far away, the growl.”
