Four Genre-Related Soundtracks issued from Dragon’s Domain
Dragon’s Domain Records, to be distributed through buysoundtrax.com, announces four new soundtrack CD releases, each with a strong science fiction or horror connection—many of the scores are being released on CD for the first time.
Released in 1998, T-REX: BACK TO THE CRETACEOUS is an educational narrative IMAX film composed by William Ross (DRIFTWOOD, TUCK EVERLASTING, LADDER 49). The composer’s gorgeous music is the epitome of the grandiose IMAX film score. But for as beautiful, touching, and emotional as Ross’ score gets, there is also a dark side. The Late Cretaceous is a dangerous, mysterious, and merciless period and Ross paints its treacherous landscapes with aplomb.
Directed by Richard Franklin and produced by Antony I. Ginnane, the Australian film PATRICK is a psychological horror-thriller that tells the story of a mentally disturbed young man who ends up comatose in a private clinic. Although unable to move or speak, Patrick possesses telekinetic powers and his conscious mind is capable of leaving his physical body to travel limitless distances in search of victims. The unorthodox scoring approach by composer Brian May (MAD MAX, THE ROAD WARRIOR, THE SURVIVOR, HARLEQUIN) to scoring PATRICK involved composing music that expresses both sides of the narrative coin: an invalid patient with telekinetic powers aching to win the affection of his unrequited love, and Patrick’s willingness to stop at nothing, not even murder, to possess the object of his desire.
The Golden Age of Science Fiction Vol. 1 proffers two films from the 1950s directed by Edward Bernds. The music for WORLD WITHOUT END was composed by acclaimed film scorer Leith Stevens (DESTINATION MOON, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS) and is an effective action-oriented score rich with suspenseful mysteriosos, muscular action dissonances, and a compelling love theme. The score for QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE was composed by Marlin Skiles (FLIGHT TO MARS, THE MAZE, SPACE MONSTER), whose work was adept but never achieved the acclaim Stevens did. For QUEEN, Skiles featured a female soprano singing in the style of a Theremin, provides a bit of humor where fitting, and some martial-styled for the Venusian women which inevitably, turns to syrupy romantic airs as the story reaches its climax.
The Gerald Fried Collection, Volume 1, features music by prolific composer Gerald Fried (THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., STAR TREK, ROOTS). The 1978 made-for-TV movie CRUISE INTO TERROR tells the story of the son of Satan hitching a ride inside an Egyptian sarcophagus and causing havoc when shipped as cargo on a pleasure cruise ship. Fried recorded the score with a 40-piece orchestra, providing both a Love Boat-styled theme, an eerie Gregorian chant for the contents of the sarcophagus, and used his favorite medieval chant, the Dies Irae, to maintain an air of horrific drama throughout the presentation. Also featured is the score to SURVIVE!, a movie about the Uruguayan rugby players whose plane crashed in the Andes and forced the survivors to take desperate measured to stay alive.
