Walter Mair Scores THE UNFAMILIAR
THE UNFAMILIAR tells the story of a British Army doctor who comes back from a war thinking that she has PTSD only to discover that there is a more daunting malevolence at work making the life that she knew… unfamiliar.
The British film is directed by Henk Pretorius, a Britain-based, multi-award-winning and commercially celebrated South African-born filmmaker. THE UNFAMILIAR is Pretorius’ first British feature film, after having refined his skill as a filmmaker on some of South Africa’s most loved comedies and dramatic features.
The film’s spine-tingling score is the work of award-winning, London-based composer, Walter Mair (CALL OF DUTY: MOBILE, FORMULA 1: DRIVE TO SURVIVE, BALANCE NOT SYMMETRY). The music incorporates original Hawaiian instruments combined with an instrument called “The Octo Bass”—a custom made double bass twice the size of an orchestral double bass. Metal tubes and chains were attached to the instrument’s body and strings to produce dark and evolving textures while some of the more intimate and emotional scenes in the film were live recorded with a string orchestra and string quartet.
THE UNFAMILIAR releases August 21st in the U.S. and September 11th in the UK
