– Randall D. Larson

After a great reception on the horror festival circuit, Cinedigm Corp acquired the North American rights to the horror film THE STAIRS. The film debuted at the Nevermore Film Festival last February, went on to win Best Film (horror) & Best Director at Queen Palm International Film Festival. It is slated to arrive in theaters for a one-night event on August 12 from, according to a report on the bloody disgusting website. Details on further showings/distribution are to follow.

The film is directed by Peter ‘Drago’ Tiemann, known as a stunt coordinator and special effects coordinator/technician, this is his directorial debut. THE STAIRS stars John Schneider, Adam Korson, Brent Bailey, Stacey Oristano, Trin Miller, and Academy Award® nominee Kathleen Quinlan. The Synopsis: What started as a week-long adventure with friends quickly turns into a terrifying fight for survival in The Stairs. in 1997, a young boy is out hunting with his grandfather (Schneider), when he stumbles upon a mysterious staircase deep in the forest. The subsequent disappearance leaves locals baffled as to the fate of the wayward pair. Twenty years later, a group of hikers set off on an ambitious trail, deep into the same stretch of wilderness. With each step away from civilization they are pulled deeper into the treacherous trap of the mountain terrain where they stumble upon the same set of ominous stairs.

Composer BC Smith, an American composer of diverse and eclectic film and television scores, has composed the score to THE STAIRS. Many of his compositions are for independent films including SMOKE SIGNALS, ADULT WORLD, DJINN [soundtrack CD released by Howlin’ Wolf Records], WEST OF REDEMPTION. For information on the composer, see his website.

Joseph Perry at WhenItWasCool gave THE STAIRS a solid review, writing “…creature-feature fans should find the practical effects makeup and creature suits impressive. The ensemble cast, which also includes Kathleen Quinlan as Jesse’s grandmother and Trin Miller as his mother, does a solid job, and Tiemann builds the tension admirably. THE STAIRS offers a good share of surprising revelations and creepy creature action.”
