New Marvel Animated Film Debuts December 14
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind THE LEGO MOVIE and 21 JUMP STREET, bring their talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind: SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE.
The computer-animated superhero film is based on Marvel’s character, Brooklyn teen Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, in which more than one can wear the mask. Morales was introduced in Chapter 4 of the “Ultimate Fallout” Marvel comic book series back in 2011. That story line dealt with the aftermath of the death of Peter Parker in the comic’s timeline.
Liev Schreiber has been cast as the film’s unspecified main villain, along with Mahershala Aliand Brian Tyree Henry as Morale’s uncle Aaron David and father Jefferson Davis, respectively.
The film is a production of Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film was announced in 2015; originally planned for last June, the film now has a release of Dec. 14, 2018.
A thirty-second preview was shown last January at a Sony animation presentation 2017, to reveal that the film focuses on Morales. In a January 10, 2017 article for Forbes [archived here], writer Scott Mendelson wrote that the footage “looked incredibl[y] stylized and resembled a cross between an Alex Ross image and a psychedelic [comic] cover” and added that with Morales, “2018 will offer another comic book superhero movie featuring a hero of color, during the same year as Marvel’s Black Panther
No word yet on a composer for the film.
