Danny Elfman to Score DOCTOR STRANGE 2

In a wide-ranging interview with Inverse, composer Danny Elfman confirmed he is scoring the 2022 movie DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS with director Sam Raimi. “I am starting to do bits of pre-work for DOCTOR STRANGE 2 that Sam Raimi’s directing,” Elfman told Eric Francisco of Inverse. “Even though I don’t start it for some months, there’s bits of recorded music they need for the sets.”

The reunion between Elfman and Raimi is great news not only for their renewed partnership, but for the Marvel franchise itself (after scoring 1990’s DARKMAN, SPIDER-MAN (2002), and SPIDER-MAN 2 (2004), disagreements led to a fallout between the director and composer; which was restored in 2013 for Disney’s OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, and now with the forthcoming DOCTOR STRANGE sequel, Elfman’s first new super-hero score since he ventured into the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) for 2017’s JUSTICE LEAGUE.

Michael Giacchino had scored Marvel’s first DOCTOR STRANGE film in 2016. The sequel, which rejoins Doctor Stephen Strange after several guest appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (THOR: RAGNAROK, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and AVENGERS: ENDGAME) and is slated to appear in the forthcoming MCU Phase Four as-yet-untitled film, SPIDERMAN: FAR FROM HOME sequel (estimated for December 2021). Currently, DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS has a scheduled release date of March 25, 2022.

There’s not much known about the next DOCTOR STRANGE movie, except these brief titillating details: In a July 2019 article in Variety by Matt Donnelly, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that the Disney+ series WANDAVISION would directly set up the Doctor Strange film, with that series’ star Elizabeth Olsen reprising her MCU role of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. The Strange film also will tie in with LOKI tv series (reported in slashfilm in 2019) and that untitled SPIDER-MAN sequel (reported in Entertainment Weekly) last December.
