How Winifred Phillips’ theme from the Spore Hero ended up in the AVENGERS ENDGAME trailer

– Randall D. Larson

Composer Winifred Phillips is featured in an article she wrote for Gamasutra which focuses on the evolution of a single melodic theme – first composed for EA’s Spore Hero video game – eventually appeared in a trailer for AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

“The style of Spore Hero couldn’t be further away from that famous Avengers style, as expertly displayed in the AVENGERS ENDGAME trailer,” Winifred writes. “The Spore Hero music I was hearing in the Avengers Endgame trailer was my ‘Hero Theme,’ which functions essentially as a leitmotif within the Spore Hero score – it’s the central recurring melody in the game. By virtue of the theme-and-variation technique, the melody undergoes a gradual transformation from invitingly cute to heroically epic. The AVENGERS ENDGAME trailer featured the most dramatic iteration of this theme.”

“Many thanks to Steve Schnur at Electronic Arts for supporting its composers by ensuring that their music has a second life in the world of TV and film!” Winifred posted on her Facebook page. “Also, thanks to Russell Emanuel and Jack Lewis at Extreme Music for creating a great library of tracks from video games. I’ve been fortunate to see a lot of my game tracks make their way into great film and TV projects, and it’s been a fascinating journey!”
